US Forces Targeted a 'Big Facility' in the Venezuelan nation, Trump Asserted Lacking Offering Specifics.
Former President Trump has stated that American forces struck a "major installation" in Venezuela in recent days. Yet, the former president withheld information about the exact purpose or site of the strike, and officials have issued no further comment from his team.
Vague Comments Made In a Talk Show
"US forces just knocked out โ I don't know if you read โ they have a large facility, where the vessels come from. The other night, we took it out. So we struck them decisively," Trump allegedly said to Republican donor and businessman John Catsimatidis in a recent interview.
Potential Implications of a Verified Strike
Should a US strike is confirmed, it would represent the first land strike since the Pentagon initiated a buildup of US military presence in the Caribbean region to interdict drug traffickers that the former administration alleges operate under the authority of Venezuelan leader Nicolรกs Maduro.
The stated purpose of the military buildup has since morphed into a quarantine aimed at disrupting the country's crude oil shipments.
Online Video and Administration Statements
Trump has for some time indicated that American military units are poised to expand the military campaign by striking targets within Venezuela, a tactic that would in theory require congressional approval.
Online video posted on social media on 24 December appeared to show an detonation said to be from an industrial zone in Zulia state. But, the video or the site in question has not been corroborated.
An official from Trump's team reportedly told a news network that the former president was describing a narco-trafficking site in his remarks.
Response and Ongoing Military Posture
The Maduro government has not commented on the incident Trump described. Furthermore, there have been no corroborating news from within the country concerning it.
The presence of American forces in the region โ a posture certain officials have called a sea blockade โ represents the largest maritime enforcement action of the Trump era.
Officials have stopped short from calling the operation as a full blockade, but have stated that around 15,000 troops are stationed across the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, including a carrier strike group, advanced fighter jets, and law enforcement vessels to implement current economic sanctions.
