TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, posts display dark colored packages with postal service labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
