Government Official States MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is โ€œexaminingโ€ cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether youโ€™re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what weโ€™ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. Thatโ€™s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: โ€˜Thatโ€™s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.โ€

Wider Defence Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a โ€œextremely riskyโ€ action by defence officials.

This wider defence environment underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of government activities, including vehicle use to communication practices.
